Business Unity South Africa, in partnership with the Clean Air Fund, recently held the first in a series of Air Quality Roundtable discussions.
The session brought together representatives from across key sectors, including energy, mining, chemicals, finance and manufacturing – to engage on evolving air quality policy and its implications for business operations, compliance frameworks and long-term sustainability planning.
A Platform for Structured Engagement
The roundtable forms part of an ongoing dialogue series designed to:
- Facilitate information sharing between industry and policy stakeholders
- Identify implementation challenges emerging from regulatory changes
- Explore practical pathways toward improved air quality outcomes
- Strengthen collaboration between business and government
Participants reflected on the interconnected nature of energy policy, climate commitments and air quality management, particularly within the context of South Africa’s ageing infrastructure, economic pressures and environmental objectives.
Key Themes Emerging from the Discussion
Several recurring themes were highlighted during the session:
Regulatory alignment and clarity
Participants emphasised the importance of coherence across national, provincial and local government frameworks, as well as consistent interpretation and implementation of legislation.
Evidence-based policymaking
There was broad agreement on the value of robust scientific data and transparent methodologies to inform regulatory decision-making.
Implementation timeframes and flexibility
Industry representatives noted the practical realities of upgrading existing facilities, especially older operations, and the need for workable compliance pathways.
Investment and transition planning
Businesses shared insights into ongoing investments in emissions reduction technologies, cleaner fuels, monitoring systems and decarbonisation roadmaps.
Capacity and collaboration
Strengthening technical capacity at the local government level and enhancing proactive engagement between stakeholders were identified as important enablers of effective implementation.
